Here are some reasons why you may decide to SORN a scooter or motorcycle:

  1. If you are restoring a bike or it is not roadworthy, for example, it was involved in an accident.
  2. If you are a fair-weather rider and don’t plan on using your scooter or motorcycle during the winter, you may choose to SORN it.
  3. You have a collection of scooters or motorcycles that you cannot ride all at once.
  4. You have brought a bike and decided not to ride it.

When can I ride a SORN motorcycle or moped?

The only time you are permitted to ride a SORN motorcycle is when you are taking it for a MOT, and it is important to highlight that the MOT must be pre-booked.

It is important to keep confirmation of your MOT in case you are stopped by the police.

How long does SORN last on a motorcycle or moped?

The great thing about declaring your motorcycle or moped as SORN is that you decide how long for. The motorcycle will remain SORN until you decide to tax the vehicle again.

Laid-up insurance is designed to cover your motorcycle or scooter when it is stored in your garage or parked on your driveway and is declared as SORN. This type of cover is going to be cheaper than normal insurance, but it will also give you peace of mind that you are protected should your motorcycle or scooter be stolen.
