However, the responsibilities don’t end there, and if you want to ride a moped on the UK roads you have to pay road tax.

The annual cost of moped tax in the UK is starts at £25 for 12 months. This is super cheap, especially when you think that that equates to just over £2 per month.

So what this means is that if you own a moped with an engine size of between 50cc – 125cc you will pay £25 per year.

This low cost is why moped use is on the rise since moped insurance is also lower than if you was to drive a car.

You may be thinking why do I need to pay moped tax? Moped tax much like other vehicle tax, was introduced in 1921 and helps take care of roads and other infrastructure and insures the roads you ride on are safe and free of things like pot holes.

This ongoing maintenance of the road network helps to reduce accidents, and improves traffic flow so you have less traffic jams.

How do I pay my moped tax?

You can pay your moped tax online via the DVLA website here and is by far the easiest way to do it.

Alternatively you also have the option of paying your moped tax in a post office. If you decide to pay your moped tax at the post office you will need to take the following documents with you:

  • Valid insurance documents.
  • V5C which is your vehicle registration document.
