Do I get a SORN refund for the road tax I paid?

Discover how to effortlessly reclaim your road tax when you SORN! It’s simpler than you think—find out the steps to get your money back when your car or motorcycle is off the road.

If you have SORN your vehicle because you plan on not using it for some time or because it is not road-worthy, you are probably wondering if you are eligible for a SORN refund for the road tax you have paid.

The great news is that yes, once you have SORN your car, motorcycle, or scooter, you can get back any road tax that has been overpaid.

What is SORN?

In case you didn’t know, you can SORN any vehicle you own if it is kept off the public road for an extended period of time.

For example, you own a classic car that needs some restoration, so while it is in your garage being lovingly worked on at all hours of the day, you have peace of mind that you do not incur the expense of paying road tax during this period.

You can register your vehicle as a SORN with the DVLA here

How do I get a SORN refund?

Once you have registered your vehicle, the SORN refund is processed automatically, and any full month will be refunded. The great news is that you don’t have to apply for it. Here is what happens:

  1. Declare your vehicle as SORN: You must notify the DVLA that you are taking your car off the road. This can be completed over the phone, via post, or online. Your road tax cancellation is initiated as soon as the DVLA processes your SORN, which is usually fast if done online or over the phone.
  2. Automatic SORN refund: When your SORN has been processed and your vehicle’s tax is cancelled, the DVLA will reimburse any full months remaining on your vehicle tax that have been paid. The reimbursement is determined on the day the DVLA receives your SORN notice. To maximise your refund, register for SORN as soon as possible.
  3. Payment method: The SORN refund is usually in the form of a cheque in the name of the registered keeper of the vehicle. The cheque is sent out to the address on file, so ensure that your DVLA records are up-to-date.

Will I get a SORN refund for the whole month?

If you plan to SORN a vehicle it is advised to do it towards the end of the month. This is because the DVLA does not refund partial months of vehicle tax.

How long does the SORN refund take?

Once you have completed the paperwork and taken your vehicle off the road, it can take between 4 and 6 weeks for your SORN refund cheque to arrive in the post. If after 8 weeks it still hasn’t arrived, check that the DVLA has your details up to date and contact them on 0300 790 6802 or using this link to the DVLA website.
